Why did we Choose Recycled Swimwear Fabrics? 💚

When designing The First Tide collection, we had a long list of things we wanted every Lamu Swim bikini to be.

It had to be flattering, comfortable, soft against the skin and durable enough to be worn on beach days, boat trips and holidays for years to come. And if we could make a more thoughtful choice for the environment without compromising on quality, we wanted to do that too.

That's what led us to recycled swimwear fabrics.

Quality Came First

One of the biggest misconceptions about recycled fabrics is that they're somehow inferior. In reality, premium recycled swimwear fabrics offer the same performance you'd expect from high-quality virgin fabrics.

We chose fabrics that feel smooth and supportive, hold their shape wear after wear, dry quickly and retain their colour, so your bikini looks just as good at the end of summer as it did on the first day you wore it, with the right care.

For us, choosing recycled never meant compromising on quality.

A More Thoughtful Choice

Most swimwear is made using virgin synthetic fibres, which require new raw materials to be produced.

Recycled swimwear fabrics give existing materials a second life, helping reduce the demand for virgin resources. While no fabric is completely impact-free, choosing recycled materials felt like a more considered option for a brand inspired by the ocean.

It's one small decision, but one we're proud to have made from the very beginning.

Built to Be Worn Again and Again

We believe one of the most sustainable things you can own is something you genuinely love and keep wearing.

Rather than creating pieces designed for a single holiday, we wanted to make bikinis that become your go-to favourites year after year.

By investing in premium fabrics and timeless designs, we aim to create swimwear that stays in your wardrobe, not at the back of a drawer.

Inspired by the Ocean

Lamu Swim was born from a love of tropical coastlines and inspired by the beautiful island of Lamu, Kenya.

The ocean isn't just our backdrop, it's the reason our brand exists. Choosing recycled fabrics felt like a natural way to reflect that connection and make choices that align with what inspires us every day.

Always Learning

As a small business, we know we won't get everything perfect.

But we're committed to making thoughtful decisions as we grow, whether that's the fabrics we choose, the packaging we use or the way we continue to improve over time.

Every collection is an opportunity to do a little better than the last.

At Lamu Swim, our goal has always been simple: create beautiful swimwear that feels incredible to wear and is made with care from start to finish.
